Carpet Sufi. Artist: Mammadhuseyn Huseynov. 1996. Warp, weft – cotton; pile – wool. Private collection

The carpet encloses religious and philosophical content and depicts Islamic symbols. Its central field illustrates the phrases Ya Allah, Ya Muhammad, and names of other Ahl al-Bayt members (the family of the Prophet). These inscriptions form the geometric pattern in Kufic script and are placed on the sides of two ornate minarets. Sufi symbols that reflect the concept of sharia (exoteric path), tariqa (esoteric path), marifa (mystical knowledge), and haqiqa (mystical truth) adorn the central field. The cartouches decorated with various symbolic ornaments related to Sufism frame the carpet.
