Kilim Garagoyunlu

Kilim Garagoyunlu. Gazakh, Azerbaijan. Early 20th century. Wool. Flat-woven, handmade. Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum collection
This kilim was included within the museum’s Flat-woven Carpets collection in 2020. The artistic structure of Garagoyunlu kilim consists of rhythmic rapports of unadorned and patterned horizontal stripes. Goshaqarmaq (paired hooks) or qoshabuynuz (paired horns) pattern belonging to the ancient Oghuz tribes decorates the wide stripes. Older weavers popularly called it kilim damgasi (tamga, a tribal symbol). A ribbon dolama ornament, a symbol of flowing water adorns the kilim strips, except for the narrowest ones, and enriches the composition’s artistic meaning.
