Carpet Khatai

Carpet As a Cultural Bridge. Let's learn more about the interesting samples from the museum's current exhibitions.
We will start with the beautiful 17th century Karabakh carpet Khatai that is on display at the exhibition in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, Istanbul.

The composition consists of crossed khatai branches and dragon elements. The central background is navy, while the khatai branches' background is white and red. Four wide red khatai elements create a big medallion in the carpet’s center, and big white and golden-edged palmettes adorn the four corners of this medallion. The four white narrow khatais divide the central medallion into four parts with stylized horned dragons by its sides and palmettes on the top and bottom. The composition sports six big dragon images.
