Carpet Oysuzlu
Let's learn more about the heroic carpet Oysuzlu from the museum's collection.
This is a classic sample of Azerbaijani carpets from the Gazakh carpet group. Its name refers to the Oysuzlu village of Tovuz.
The narrow border stripe divides the central field of the carpet into three square medallions. The ancient pattern in the middle of the central medallion called yildizli dirnakh (star claw) or guyrumlu gol (medallion with a curl) is popularly known as a symbol of celestial bodies and bravery. Gosha, galkhan, toggagabaghi ornaments in other medallions connect to the same meaning.
The ajdaha or garmagli gardakbashi pattern of the main border represented by the stylized wave-shaped walking dragons are the symbols of bravery and angel of war.
The carpet is also adorned with ildirim (lightning), garmag (hook), and other old patterns belonging to the ancient Oghuz Turks.
